Home Movie, Video Tape and Disc Transfers

From the 1940s to the 1990s, home movies were shot on 16mm and 8mm movie film. Then videotapes took over. But now projectors are few and far between, and so are VCRs. If you have a box of films or tapes that need to be preserved, we can digitize those memories so you can see them again and share with your grandkids. Movie films or VHS and other tape or recordable disc formats - bring them over before they fade away!

About Advent Digitizing

Why Advent Digitizing? We come from an analog world.

Advent Digitizing is a consumer division of Advent Media, Inc., a digital creative agency with a business-to-business focus. Its roots stretch back to 1979, when founder Steve Puffenberger started the precursor business making slide shows with "real" 35mm slides and audio tape. Then the business evolved to videotape, and eventually to the high-end digital platforms it uses today. We still have the analog gear in which we invested long ago, and it still functions!  Because we used to work with the formats you have in your closets, we're uniquely suited to transfer them to digital with the highest fidelity.

And if you want to take the next step with your legacy media, ask us about creating a "Personal Legacy Video," wherein we utilize our agency's production resources to capture interviews with you or your loved ones and give you a professional personal documentary that can preserve your story for future generations.

Digital Transfer Process & Pricing

How it Works...

1. Click

Click the button below and fill out the form telling us what you have to transfer. Please be as specific as possible (see here for tips). We’ll send you a quote via email with an estimate of the fee. Then we’ll follow up to set an appointment to drop off or ship your materials.

2. Bring

Deliver your materials to our office in Columbus, Ohio. (We prefer personal delivery, but if shipping is required please use FedEx or UPS.) If the estimate is less than $200 we will collect the estimated fee in full.  If more than $200 we’ll ask for half up front. (Credit card or check accepted.) Then we get busy processing your materials, and we’ll keep you posted when they’re done.

3. Return

Come back when we tell you they’re ready to pick up. We’ll send you a tally invoice with the actual quantities we transferred, which may adjust the balance due up or down. If you need to ship we’ll arrange return shipment. After payment of the balance, you can go home and enjoy seeing or hearing your legacy media again.

What You Get...

Choose: Flash Drive | Blu-Ray | DVD | CD | Digital Download

The most popular method is to put your digital files on a USB flash drive or portable hard disk, also known as "File Based Delivery.". We can also create DVD or CD optical disks at additional cost. Or we can upload release files to our server for you to download.

Consumer AND Professional Formats

For video, and film we uniquely transfer everything in an extreme-quality “professional" format, and then transcode it to the most common "release" format (MP4) that will play in any player, or convert it to DVD. Movie film and HDV tape can be transferred in HD for file-based delivery.

Transfers of stills (slides/prints) can be created as high-quality high-resolution JPEG or professional RAW files...or both!

Audio transfers can be delivered in the uncompressed CD quality WAV format, or rendered to a compressed format, such as MP3, for use on music players. We can also make CD player-compatible discs.

The pro format files are best for editing or enlargements, and they future-proof your investment for when "release" formats change. Professional formats are very large compared to consumer "release" formats, so requesting both will require more storage for delivery. Your quote will show approximately how much storage will be needed.

How Long it Takes...

Typically it takes 2 weeks or less to process an order from the time we receive your materials, but larger orders may take longer. Rush (2-3 days) or Urgent (next day) delivery may be available depending on quantity requested and our availability. Rush fees apply. Time for shipping not included. If you need Rush or Urgent delivery, please mention turnaround time in your request for quote.

What It Costs...

$75Minimum Order*

We price everything separately based on content length or image quantity, so there is no "box" pricing. Why should you pay the same for a 15-minute tape as a 6-hour one?  Our pricing is often less than the "Box" outfits, and we transfer things they won't touch. When you request a no-obligation quote, you will receive a detailed estimate showing pricing for all options pertaining to your format. Our standard discount for non-rush orders over $100 is 1% per $100, maximum 25%, so the larger the order, the more you save. Various formats or source items may be combined in a single order.

Click below and fill in the form, and be as accurate as you can with program length and quantity.  We'll send you a no-obligation quote right away.

What Else? Editing!

If you're preserving hours of video or dozens of films, it can get pretty boring for friends or relatives to watch. We can edit what we transfer, creating powerful programming with music or narration. With stills we can create a "Video Photo Album" that sequences your pictures, with or without music. For movies or home videos you can pick the parts you want so we can assemble a more concise retrospective of a family member, or a string of birthdays or holidays. We can make your program "loop" so you can let it run for the duration of an event or party. The "box" outfits can't do that. Ask us about editing when you contact us for a quote.

Don't know what you have?

If you found a "mystery tape," we can do a social distanced "audition." Set an appointment to drop off your material. Wait in your car while we play your tape or record, and you can listen or watch on your phone for a few seconds to know whether or not the tape has content worth transferring. If the tape is blank, we'll bring it out and you'll be on your way. If it's good we'll start the transfer process. You can't do that with a maill-in "box" service!
